Prof. Dr. Christian Theobalt

ABOUT / Prof. Dr. Christian Theobalt

Prof. Dr. Christian Theobalt (male) is a full professor of Computer Science at Saarland University and the head of the research group "Graphics, Vision, & Video" at the Max-Planck-Institute for Informatics. From 2007 until 2009 he was a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Stanford University. He received his MSc degree in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, and his Diploma (MS) degree in Computer Science from Saarland University, in 2000 and 2001 respectively. In 2005, he received his PhD (Dr.-Ing.) from Saarland University and Max-Planck-Institute for Informatics. His research deals with algorithmic problems that lie on the boundary between the fields of Computer Vision and Computer Graphics, such as static and dynamic 3D scene reconstruction, marker-less motion and performance capture, virtual and augmented reality, computer animation, appearance and reflectance modelling, machine learning for graphics and vision, new sensors for 3D acquisition, advanced video processing, as well as image- and physically-based rendering. He is also interested in using reconstruction techniques for human computer interaction. He has done pioneering work in 4D scene reconstruction, free-viewpoint video and marker-less motion capture. Christian Theobalt  has published over 150 peer reviewed research papers, including more than 30 at the top graphics conferences (SIGGRAPH, SIGGRAPH Asia, EUROGRAPHICS), 29 at the top vision conferences (CVPR, ECCV, ICCV), and he also regularly contributes to the top HCI venues (ACM CHI and UIST). He is regularly on the program committees of the top conferences in vision and graphics, and served as program chair of important conferences in both areas (e.g. 3DV, High Performance Graphics). For his work, he received numerous awards (https://people.mpi-inf.mpg.de/~theobalt/myself.html), including the Otto Hahn Medal of the Max-Planck Society in 2007, the EUROGRAPHICS Young Researcher Award in 2009, and the German Pattern Recognition Award 2012. Further, in 2013 he was awarded an ERC Starting Grant by the European Union. In 2015, he was selected as one of the top 40 innovation leaders under 40 in Germany by the business magazine Capital. Christian Theobalt is a Principal Investigator and a member of the Steering Committee of the Intel Visual Computing Institute in Saarbrücken. He is also a co-founder of an award-winning spin-off company from his group - www.thecaptury.com - that is commercializing a new generation of marker-less motion and performance capture solutions.
