Professor Niloy Mitra’s (male) is a Professor of Geometry Processing in the Department of Computer Science, UCL. Dr. Mitra’s received his MS (2002) and PhD (Sept. 2006) in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University under the guidance of Prof. Leonidas Guibas and Prof. Marc Levoy, and was a postdoctoral scholar with Prof. Helmut Pottmann at Technical University Vienna. His research primarily centres on algorithmic issues in shape analysis and geometry processing. He has over 60 published papers with an h-index of 25. His research focuses on extracting high-level semantic understanding of the world by analyzing raw and unstructured data collections (e.g., images, scans, shape repositories). He has been developing a mathematical framework to link apparently heterogeneous data sources using a system of relations thus laying the foundation of ‘structure-aware geometry processing. This novel research direction has brought together diverse fields such as computer graphics, shape analysis, data analysis, robotics, and interaction. He has successfully applied this philosophy to develop computational frameworks for smart and intuitive acquisition, manipulation and synthesis of fabrication- and function-aware 3D geometry. He received his PhD from Stanford University in 2006. He holds an ERC Starting Researcher award in the area of Smart Geometry. He was awarded the ACM SIGGRAPH Significant New Researcher Award in 2013. In 2015 he received the British Computer Society’s Roger Needham award for outstanding early career performance; only one such award is made in the UK each year.
